Cross associations
Cross associations are private associations with a long tradition dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Cross associations traditionally had a series of goals: providing information in the field of public health, promoting hygiene, preventing and combating contagious diseases, infections and epidemics, caring for and nursing the sick at home, lending nursing supplies and aids and training foster sisters.
The cross associations were organized according to religious or political orientation, as was common in the Netherlands until the 1980s. To use the services one had to be a member. More and more local associations and branches were established throughout the country, with cross-posts and clinics where members could go. The most important tasks were the information, prevention, nursing and care of the sick at home by trained nurses and carers.
In the mid-1970s, healthcare in the Netherlands was financed differently. With the arrival of the General Special Medical Expenses Act (AWBZ), the healthcare landscape in our country changed. Tasks were divided differently from then on and various forms of care emerged. This also applies to West Brabant and Nieuw-Vossemeer.
The Nieuw-Vossemeer Cross Association now limits itself to lending aids.
